Review: Slim Down South Cookbook

Recently I had the opportunity to sit down with Carolyn O’Neil, who is the author of a new cookbook entitled, “Slim Down South.” Carolyn and I go waaaaayyyyy back…. I interned with her when she was the host and producer of CNN’s “On the Menu.”

At that time – many moons ago – I was attempting to make my way into the world of nutrition as a dietitian and Carolyn was (and still is) a true pioneer. She was one of the first registered dietitians to bridge the nutrition and communications gap. Moderation is Boring, and I Know It!

With Spring just around the corner, my thoughts are turning to bathing suit season (which is hard to even imagine given all the cold, ice and snow we have had recently).  (Is anyone else ready for Elsa to go away?) But, before I know it, warm weather will be upon us.

Of course, I would like to lose about five pounds to be “bathing suit ready.”  But ever since I can remember I’ve always wanted to lose 5 more pounds – no matter my weight.  I always think I could look better, have fewer wrinkles, work out more, etc., etc., but the truth is that I am not perfect and I never will be (sigh)! Even as a registered dietitian, one of my favorite foods is French fries.  I love them and I think I always will.  I can’t live without them, so I’ve got to learn to live with them.  Yes, this RD is admitting that French fries will be a part of her diet.  The key is that they will not be a staple or the majority.  But, I will enjoy them here and there as I will enjoy other indulgent and decadent foods.  The truth is that part of eating is enjoying your food and every now and then I want to enjoy a good French fry (or two)!

Healthy Halloween Tips and Kid-Friendly Recipes!

I recently had a reader ask, “How can I avoid Halloween weight gain without missing out on the fun?” 

It’s a question I’ve asked myself every October. Between holiday parties and baskets filled with high-calorie sweets, it’s little surprise the number on the scale tends to rise through late October and into the winter holidays. So how do you prevent packing on the pounds or sticking to your diet while still participating in all the spooky festivities?

One of the easiest ways to enjoy your favorite treats without the additional calories is to choose foods and beverages with low-calorie sweeteners. For example, choosing sugar-free chocolates can save 50 calories a day. Over the course of a year, those daily calorie savings can really add up. Drinking a diet soda can shave off 150 calories!

Love to Eat or Eat to Love

With Valentine’s Day approaching, I thought I would share a little on love and eating. To be perfectly honest, I have never been a big fan of Valentine’s Day. It seems very contrived, in my opinion. Who wants to get flowers from their significant other because they feel they have to?!

But in 2011, Valentine’s Day took on a whole new meaning. On February 14 that year, the most wonderful bundle of joy entered our lives. A room full of Valentines stacked to the ceiling wouldn’t come close to expressing how much love and joy he has brought our family. And, even though I cannot believe he will be 3 years old soon, I so hate to see the coming of his birthday. Because once he is 4, it means I have just 15 years left before he “officially leaves the nest.” (A lifetime of birthdays would not be enough for me – 18 is way too short.)

Since my son is a “Valentine baby” it got me thinking about all that we do on Valentine’s Day. And, for many it’s not just an excuse to buy overpriced flowers, it’s also an excuse to overindulge. But I think we should begin to think about this holiday (and others) in a different way.

Do we love to eat or are we eating for love?

I will be the first to admit that I do love to eat. (Last week I had French fries! Yes – I am a dietitian and I am admitting that my favorite food is French fries!) But, what I should be doing is eating for love. What exactly do I mean by this, you ask? What I mean is this. If I am eating for love, then I am eating to take care of myself so that I can take care of others – my children and my husband. So, this Valentine’s Day why not focus on delicious foods that can help you eat for love – that is eat better? Here are a few quick suggestions:

  • Opt for a small piece of dark chocolate. Research suggests that dark chocolate contains antioxidants that are good for the heart.
  • Instead of going out for an overpriced, fancy dinner on Valentine’s Day, make a date to exercise. Perhaps it’s a long bike ride or a hike up a mountain. Either way, the exercise will get your heart pumping and you’ll be spending quality with each other, instead of excess calories.
  • If you drink, do so in moderation and opt for a glass of red wine. Again, research has shown that red wine contains good for you antioxidants.
  • If you are preparing a special meal, go light on the sauces. Grill or bake instead of fry and opt for delicious fruit as a dessert with a small amount of whipped topping.
  • Check out the many reduced-sugar, sugar-free and light options available. There are plenty of reduced-calorie recipes available that can still make a tasty treat and feed your craving.

Myth Buster: Why Fad Diets Don’t Work

As we close in on the winter holidays and the new year, it’s important to remember that drastic cuts in calories are just as bad for you as drastic increases in calories. Experts say that significantly reducing the number of calories you consume can actually hinder weight loss efforts. Drastically cutting calories often leaves you feeling deprived and very low-calorie diets cannot be maintained over the long-term. “Instead of focusing on deprivation, focus on making small changes you can live with for a lifetime,” says Beth Hubrich, a registered dietitian with Calorie Control Council.

Instead of opting for a fad diet in between holidays, find a reasonable eating and exercise plan that supports the loss of one-half to two pounds per week OR consider weight maintenance as a goal until the holidays are over. “Adopt healthful habits that you will be able to stick to indefinitely, and always allow yourself a little wiggle room for special occasions,” said Hubrich. “By making better nutrition choices, eating smaller portions, exercising and reducing you overall caloric intake you have the best chance of keeping off weight over the long term.”
