Keep the Pounds Down and the Holiday Spirit Up

This morning, I listened to a podcast that talked about the most common holiday weight gain rumor, which is that during the holiday season people gain an average of 8-12 pounds from the span of Thanksgiving to New Years. 8-12 pounds! Think about that in bags of potatoes for a second…not good and hard to lose come January 1. Even if this is in fact a rumor and not based in truth – there is no question that many people struggle with unwanted weight gain around this merry season. Here are 3 simple ways to make sure you don’t pack on the pounds as you enjoy the holidays this year.

  1. EX-ER-CISE!

It is something we just can’t get away from. Many of us have an exercise routine that tends to get pushed down on our priority list come holiday season. Make sure that doesn’t happen. And if you don’t have a steady routine – what better time to start? Get in the gym at least twice a week and lift some weights. This is just as important for women as it is for men. Get 30 minutes of cardio (a gym class, run, walking, biking etc.) 3-4 times a week. This is a good place to start. This time of year there are many helpful blogs out there that have holiday workout schedules. A simple Pinterest search will leave you full of exercise inspo!

  1. EAT QUALITY NOT QUANTITYUntitled design (2)

The holidays are heavy on temptation. No one is safe. Making a point to eat quality over quantity will help you avoid those holiday pitfalls of senseless eating of sugar cookies. One way to make sure your brain is in sync with your stomach is never go to a holiday event, party, dinner etc. hungry. About an hour before heading out eat a healthy snack that
is around 100 calories. Something high in protein and fiber are good options.

  1. DON’T LOSE COUNT OF LIQUID CALORIES

Sometimes it isn’t what you eat but what you drink! There are a lot of calorie laden drinks flowing around the holiday season. Think eggnog, hot chocolate, mudslides and that sugar filled holiday punch. There are plenty of ways to cut calories with these yummy beverages. Check out our Pinterest board for ideas!
