Skinny Recipe: Watermelon Summer Slushies

This refreshing summer drink that will surely please kids and adults alike. Since each serving is only 30 calories, feel free to add an ounce or so of bourbon or vodka per glass for an adults-only version!

Here are four tips to pick the best watermelon in the grocery store:

  • Look for a dull watermelon: A shiny watermelon indicated that it’s underripe.
  • Find the yellow spot: Watermelons develop a splotch where they rest on the ground and when that splotch is creamy yellow it’s an indication that it’s ripe for the picking.
  • Give it a thump: Tap the underbelly of the watermelon. A ripe one will have a deep hollow sound. Under-ripe or over-ripe melons will sound dull.
  • Pick it up: No matter the size, a ripe watermelon will feel heavy and dense.

Serving Size: 1/2 cup


Lemonade Cubes:

8 cups cold water
1 cup Splenda Granular
1 envelope unsweetened lemonade flavor drink mix

Super Cool Summer Slushie:

6 cups diced seedless watermelon
1 envelope unsweetened watermelon flavor drink mix
1 1/2 cups prepared Lemonade Cubes


To make the lemonade cubes, combine water, Splenda, and lemonade mix in a pitcher, stirring until everything is dissolved. Pour lemonade into ice trays and freeze until solid.

To make the slushies, blend water, Splenda, drink mix, and lemonade cubes in a blender until “slush-ified.” Serve immediately.

Store any leftover cubes in a zip-top plastic bag in the freezer. Use them cubes in ice tea, lemonade, or fruit juice for a zesty additional.
